Other Beaches on the Island

The other locations on the island of Murter offer just as many beaches, coves, and small bays where you can stop for a swim in complete tranquility.

  • Lučica Beach: Near Jezera, it is a pebble bay with concrete sunbathing areas. It is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea, with bars, restaurants, and showers nearby.

One of the main attractions of Murter is its proximity to the Kornati National Park, an archipelago of 89 stunning islands and islets. It is a paradise for sailing, snorkeling, and hiking enthusiasts. Several tours, mini cruises, and boats depart from Murter to visit the islands.

Visiting the Wooden Shipbuilding Museum in Betina

The Wooden Shipbuilding Museum is located in the town of Betina, a small historic village of about 800 inhabitants that thrives on tourism, fishing, agriculture, and crafts. This museum offers a fascinating insight into the millennial tradition of wooden shipbuilding in the region. It is an educational and engaging experience for both adults and children. The museum's collection includes 406 items related to shipbuilding, fishing, agriculture, and daily life. Spanning 250 square meters, it features five exhibition halls and a two-story gallery with maritime equipment installations.

When to Visit

Murter is visitable year-round, but the best time is from May to September, when the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities and beach days. July and August are the busiest months, but ideal for those who enjoy beach life, entertainment, and festivals. Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer tourists. Murter hosts several events and festivals in music, cinema, and sailing throughout the year, especially in summer, which can be the perfect occasion for a trip to the island.

What to Eat

The cuisine of Murter is a delightful mix of Mediterranean and Dalmatian flavors. Must-try dishes include: Peka, a traditional dish of meat or fish cooked under an iron bell with potatoes and vegetables; brodet, a fish stew served with polenta. The island menus feature grilled sardines and fried fish with fresh calamari, often served with salad and fries.

How to Get to Murter

Murter is easily accessible by car via the E65 from Zadar to Šibenik or the old coastal road, the Adriatic Highway, which at the cost of a longer journey offers stunning views of the Adriatic and the Croatian islands. Once you reach near Tisno, simply follow the signs for the island of Murter and cross the drawbridge that connects the mainland to the island. The island is also reachable by bus services connecting Zadar and Šibenik with the various centers of the island. Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Pescara or Ancona to the Croatian coast and from there rent a car to the island. By air, the nearest airports are Zadar (about 60 km) and Split (about 100 km). From there, you can rent a car or take a bus to Murter.
