The island of Ada Bojana is one of the most famous in Montenegro. A gem dedicated to naturists, cleverly hidden from curious eyes, surrounded on two sides by the Bojana River and on the third by the crystal-clear waters of the sea, known as the best destination for those seeking a summer vacation in its most natural form. Here, you will find the renowned naturist camp FKK Ada Bojana.

The island was artificially formed due to sedimentation caused by the flooding of the Bojana River, which separates Montenegro and Albania, around the wreck of the ship Merito, which ran aground where Ada Bojana stands today in the 19th century.

The shores washed by the Bojana River are recognizable for its wooden houses, from which local residents still traditionally catch fish that can be immediately tasted in local restaurants. The island of Ada Bojana is rich in subtropical and Mediterranean vegetation. Since the accommodation facilities were built in the early '70s, Ada has long been known as the destination of the hippie generation. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, which truly seems to connect two different worlds. On one side, there are rules and conformity, and on the other, a world that is more authentic and free.

Where is Ada Bojana

Ada Bojana is located near Ulcinj, the southernmost city of the Montenegrin coast, protected by the Bojana River, Lake Sasko, and the massif of Mount Rumija. Thanks to its natural potential, Ulcinj is a city with a strong tourist vocation, especially for those who want to spend a relaxing and fun time at the beach, due to the longest beach on the Adriatic, Velika Plaza, stretching 13 km, Ada Bojana, and Valdanos - a unique bay with a coast lined with ancient olive trees. The reconstructed historic center of Ulcinj, filled with interesting restaurants, cafes, galleries, and hotels, makes it a city worth visiting.

The warm, clear, and transparent sea and the mild climate of the coast are an irresistible attraction for every tourist. However, this also makes it particularly crowded and chaotic, with a lot of traffic.

According to historical data, Ulcinj is also one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast. It is believed to be over 2,000 years old. This area has been a crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures for centuries, and the richness of its historical heritage can be felt at every step. Since traces of early settlements in Ulcinj appear before the 5th century BC, it is believed that the city was founded by the Illyrians, a people of Indo-European origin.

About 10,000 people live in Ulcinj, including the largest Albanian community in the country. A city whose current face reflects the many influences and peoples that have passed through it, including Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and even Venetian constructions. Maltese pirates also chose Ulcinj as their hideout due to its strategic position on the Bojana River.

Additionally, they are only 100 meters from the beach, and have separate entrances and lovely terraces with sea views. The water is shallow, making it an excellent solution for children. The beach can accommodate up to 13,000 people.

Nearby, there are restaurants, sports fields, and parking. The entrance to Ada Bojana is charged:

  • 5 euros by car + 1 euro per person
  • 2 euros per person for those entering on foot

It is said that Ada Bojana is a place capable of driving away negative thoughts. Since the entire area is unusually quiet, after a few days here, it will become clear how silence can calm people, return them to serenity, and rejuvenate their vital energy. Those wishing to add a bit of sport and adrenaline to their vacation on the island can engage in horseback riding, sailing, paragliding, kite surfing, and windsurfing.

For windsurfing in particular, Ada Bojana has a high-level school. Moreover, the opportunities offered by the environment satisfy both amateurs and professionals. The calm water of the lake, where beginners learn their first steps in windsurfing, is perfect for newcomers, while the winds blowing on the beaches of Ada create excellent waves, ideal for those who are already more accustomed to the board.

Useful information about Montenegro

Montenegro is a small mountainous country in Southeastern Europe, with dense forests inhabited by wolves and bears, overlooking the Adriatic Sea and boasting wonderful sandy coasts. Independent since 2006, it is quickly climbing the ranks of the world's most sought-after tourist destinations.

It is easily accessible, located about an hour's flight from Rome, less than two from Paris or Istanbul, or five from Dubai. It is the seventh smallest country in Europe, with fewer than a million inhabitants, but despite its small size, it boasts several records: it has the deepest canyon on the continent, the largest lake in the Balkans and the longest underground river, and it is home to the southernmost glacial bay, the cleanest river, and one of the last rainforests in Europe. It is not surprising that it is becoming an increasingly popular destination.
